On 22 April 2009, during a Rock Radio interview promoting Iron Maiden: Flight 666, drummer Nicko McBrain mentioned that Iron Maiden had booked studio time for early 2010.[9] On 8 June, the album artwork, release date, and track listing were revealed, along with a free download of the track "El Dorado."[8] The album was released as a regular CD, an iTunes LP, a digital download, a vinyl picture disc, and a limited collector's "Mission Edition", containing interviews and a game entitled Mission II: Rescue & Revenge.[10]
"El Dorado" was released as a free digital download on the band's official website on 8 June and went on to win in the Best Metal Performance category at the 2011 Grammy Awards.[24] According to Smith, the song's lyrics, penned by Dickinson, are based on the economic recession which began in 2007 and comment on "people's expectations of a better life" and how "the rug [was] pulled out from under them" as a result of lending.[25]
The album's supporting tour saw the band perform 101 shows across the globe to an estimated audience of well over two and a half million,[311] including their first visits to Singapore, Indonesia, and South Korea,[306] before concluding in London on 6 August 2011.[312] As the tour's 2010 leg preceded The Final Frontier's release, the band made "El Dorado" available as a free download on 8 June,[304] which would go on to win the award for Best Metal Performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards on 13 February 2011.[313] It was the band's first win following two previous Grammy nominations ("Fear of the Dark" in 1994 and "The Wicker Man" in 2001).[314] During both years of the tour band headlined the biggest festivals in the world, including Rock Werchter, Roskilde, Nova Rock, Pukkelpop, Soundwave (five dates), Wacken, Sziget, Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival d'été de Québec also Sonisphere Festival dates in the UK, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and Switzerland.
